American Oak

  • American Oak is our bread and butter. Also known as American White Oak, the oak is a native hardwood of North America. Highly regarded for its strength and durability, where aesthetics are equally important to structural integrity, American Oak is our material of choice.

  • Grain is the texture and variation in the size of the wood cells. American Oak has a distinctive grain pattern, with variance in characteristics that we optimise in different elements of our pieces to utilise the straight grain and wavy grain features of the wood. It’s what makes your handmade piece feel irresistible.

  • In addition to its strength, durability and consistent characteristics, American Oak has reasonably low movement compared to some other Australian hard woods we have experience working with such as Tasmanian Oak and Victoria Ash. With less variance in the natural tendency of the wood to contract and expand in changes in climate the lifetime of the product is further increased.

The quality of the grain is beautifully receptive to a wide range of stains, oils and colours that further accentuate the characteristics of the visual and textural style we love.

Colour

  • Colour is essential to every project. We regularly work with a range of 24 colours that we recommend and occasionally adjust seasonally that you can choose from.

In addition, for ultimate customisation, we can finish our pieces in any colour from Dulux or Porter’s Paints colour ranges.

  • We achieve our colour with our finishers by using a painting and finishing process called Two-Pack, also referred to as 2 Pack and 2 Pac.

Two-Pack is a paint system involving a mixture of two parts – acrylic paint, and a hardener. When combined, these two resins result in a chemical reaction producing a hardened solution. This creates a seamless finish with a consistent colour and low gloss sheen that is durable and ideal for everyday living.

Our recommendation, which comes standard with our Two-Pack finish is a 10% clear gloss with the colour finish which creates an elegant and subtle sheen to the piece, highlighting the grain texture.

We have a matte finish available upon request.

Oils & Stains

  • Oils and stains are used to darken or lighten timber as well as highlight grain and pattern by creating a colour variation in the growth rings.

  • Reflection can change the appearance of the timber in different lighting, accentuating curves and giving our pieces an even more dynamic feel.

Our recommendation, which comes standard, is a 10% gloss with the stain finish which creates an elegant and subtle sheen to the piece, highlighting the grain texture.

We have a matte finish available upon request.

See below our curated selection of oil & stain finishes.

  • American Oak has a beautiful natural colour tone of white, faded golds, pinkish tints and light brown hues. We never leave our wood pieces raw and even a “natural” finish is a clear, light wash coat applied onto the wood, which protects from natural oils, spills and stains as well as the oxidisation process and the movement of the wood from changes in humidity.
